For an adult, an itinerant life style and lots of moves can mean adventure, fun experiences, and a chance to enlarge your horizons. For a child, though, moving is more likely to spell out dishevel, insecurity, and a lingering uprooted feeing.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. For some children, moving is an entirely positive experience. They get to share the adventure, and the fun of discovering all the glories of their new location makes up for the pain of what had to be left behind.

Moving Time! Helping Your Child Deal with Upheaval | Toya GamesHow can you help your child come out of a move with positive experiences? Here are some important tips from those who have been there, done that.

  1. Be there for your child — Be around for your child, both before the move, during the move, and after the move, and give him plenty of time to share his thoughts and feelings in an open, non-judgmental environment.
  2. Let your child be involved — Where possible, let our child work with you to help plan the logistics that surround moving. Let him give input on decisions that will have to be made; little decisions such as whether to take a morning or afternoon flight and larger decisions like which part of town to rent in.
  3. Work on making the family unit strong — You’d like to be a close family always, but it’s when a move is on the horizon that it really, really matters. If your children are best friends—or your child is your best friend—the people that matter most in his life will stay with him even when other peripherals change.
  4. Take time out for experiences — If it’s going to be a fun adventure, treat it like one. Research the ‘things to do’ in your new city, and take time out in the first week and months to visit amusement parks, museums, or other places that your child would find interesting. Sample all the local cuisine, and make sure you don’t forget to sample allthe ice cream parlors in town.

If you are your child’s best friend, are there for him when he needs you, and you take the time to involve your child and let him adventure with you, this next move can be one of the most wonderful experiences in both of your lives.
